Remembering Lolito 1928-2012

This week I am in Vancouver , helping prepare for my grandfather's (lolito) funeral. He passed away to be with our Lord on the night of December 11, 2012.
Part of my responsibilities since arriving in BC on the 13th, have been to look after the multi-media aspect of my grandfather's memorial service, including producing an end-of-life video to be played in front of all family and friends at the final church service scheduled for December 20th... Since arriving, I have been coordinating with all family members, looking through picture albums and old video cameras to gather photos of my lolito's 7 children and 26 grandchildren throughout the years. I am filming all 7 children sharing their "best memories" of lolito. My family and I are also going to church everyday to attend scheduled prayer/worship services, leading up to my grandfather's funeral this week.  Its a busy time.  On Dec. 25, we get together again for Christmas. It's then my birthday on the 28th, and I join my family one more time for New Year on Jan 1st, before heading back to Toronto Pearson and Barrie on the 2nd, and back on the air at Life 100.3 on Jan 3rd.
For this blog post, I thought Id share a couple of photos I am including in the production of my lolito's memorial video, which I am using this week. Below is a copy of my grandparent's wedding back in 1952, and a copy of a prayer for my lolito that my family put together. One of the nicest final memories I had of lolito, was the time he asked me : when my friends and I were coming to visit their condo and use their swimming pool... I remember standing in front of their condo building, after having helped unbuckle his seatbelt in the car, and I said next time I visit Id go, and he said we were always welcome to use it... although sadly, that day never came.  Maybe over he next week, I can try to make a point to have a swim. :) See you back in town on Jan 3rd... :)

Praying for Grandparents

Thought I'd get a little personal and share some stories from my family... in hopes you can join with us in prayer this week....

Last Thursday (Nov 22), my family in Vancouver was having dinner at a restaurant when my grandfather (lolito) accidentally choked on a piece of food.  My brother attempted the heimlich maneuver, however, my lolito passed out, and 911 was called.  The paramedics arrived in 10 minutes and tried to revive lolito by shocking his chest - he was rushed to emergency with my family by his side.

We called St.Teresa's church in the middle of the night, and a parish representative rushed over to pray with my lolito, and family, in the ER that night. My cousin in Sydney, Australia phoned the church, and I (in Ontario) called emergency in Vancouver to let them know to admit the church representative.... as all my family was by lolito's side.

My lolito has been in the hospital  ICU for just over a week, in a coma. Doctors say his brain is in need of healing, as there has been damage due to lack of oxygen, when he passed out at the restaurant.

My entire family is praying for his recovery today.  Within 1 week, my grandfather has been able to open his eyes (finally) after being asleep for so long, however, he is still unresponsive to those around him, and cannot talk or move any parts of his body... although doctors say his organs and vitals are healthy.

According to the doctors, "Its up to (my lolito) to keep fighting" if he wants to live.

I talked to lolito on the phone from here in Ontario to BC last night (Dec 2).... although he could not respond.

I told him I had been going to church here with my friends, dedicating the service to him-- and we all have been praying for his brain to heal.

I told him our staff at Life 100.3 have included lolito in our prayer requests... that he may get well, God-willing, and that he would remain strong throughout this trying time.

I told him, how being in the hospital, is really strengthening the faith of my family, and drawing us closer together in prayer and petition to God, who we all know through Christ, has the power to heal.

We have been pleased with his progress so far, and although doctors say a "full recovery" is unlikely.... we are continuing to pray for the best- as the likelihood of a "partial recovery" is possible, according to doctors.

Finally..... I told Lolito that I will be home in Vancouver for Christmas 2012.... and I am praying he is conscious for when our family finally gets together for the holidays.

Below is a picture of my lolito and lolita (grandparents) who celebrated over 60 years of marriage last Monday (Nov 26) at the hospital....  this photo was taken last Christmas, arent they cute?

Dear God,

Continuing to believe that you know the best for lolito and for the family. And, that you have a plan.  Your ways our higher than ours. We pray that through Christ's healing hand - lolito's brain would be healed... in your perfect time.  We also lift this entire situation up to you... all fears, all worries... we surrender them to you. We ask that your loving angels surround lolito, keeping him free from pain, and most of all, that your heavenly spirit be with lolito at this time where he is fighting to stay alive.  If this is your will, please assist lolito and revive his consciousness. Thank you for helping him throughout the past week, and making progress in his healing.  We continue to pray for the best, and for the most peaceful outcome- where you will be glorified, above all. In Jesus name, we pray.

Amen.

Thanks so much for taking the time to pray for my lolito and family.  I appreciate it a lot. :)

May God bless the rest of your day!

A Helping Hand this Winter

A woman was visiting New York city last  Nov. 14 when she came across a shoeless man asking for change.

As she was about to approach, she said a police officer came up to the man with a pair of all-weather boots and thermal socks on the frigid night.

She recorded his generosity on her cellphone.

This photo shows the officer kneeling beside the man with the boots at his feet.

Would you ever put your baby in one of these?!!

Nope, not the latest fashion statement.... however, a new invention made by  a parent.

It utilizes a baby's crawling abilities to mop the floor. Hmm. I dunno.

I really dont think this is the most hygenic outfit to dress your baby in, however, I should add, I am not and have never been a parent. I could see how some parents could teach thier kids to do chores at an early age with tihs gimmick.... but really... I dunno if I personally would feel comfortable dressing a child in this.

What do you think?

Do you know what Cyber Bullying looks like?

If you are a parent now, you most likely did not grow up with the same methods of bullying
some children today are facing.

Back then: No internet, No webcam, No chatrooms, No facebook.
Acc. to Canadian Kids Help Phone survey: 33% of kids have talked to someone online theyve never met. 30% have emailed a picture of themselves.

Most kids are afraid to tell their parents about cyber bullying.
Educate yourself on what cyber-bullying looks like-- you'd be VERY surprised.
And talk to your kids about making smart choices online, and how to report/stand up to online bullies.
This is a GREAT informational article/link about Cyber Bullying......

http://loveourchildrenusa.org/parent_cyberbullying.php

And yes, the author is American, but the concepts are very real, and will be extremely eye opening to you as a parent.

God bless you! Keep your family internet safe! :)

Saying Grace before meals in restaurants

Is your family comfortable with thanking God for your food/blessings even in public settings? :)

These firefighters interviewed on KTRE News say "We were not trying to make a spiritual statement or anything. That's just what we do at the station all the time."

This picture of the praying heroes has since gone viral.

Losing ALL the pictures on your SD card... Aaah!!!

It may have happened once to you... and recently, it happened to me!  Losing ALL the pictures on your SD card from an Error.  It can happen so easily.  You pull the SD Card from your laptop (when you accidentally forget to "safely remove" the drive), and the next thing you know... you double click on the SD Card drive and its empty!!! AAAH!!! No pictures?!!  You put your SD Card in your camera, and it recognizes ZERO photos. Are all your pictures are gone forever? Not necessarily.

This dilemma happened to my SD card this week...  pictures from travels, friends, and great memories. But, none of them were accessible due to the SD card error and my digital camera recognizing no pictures at all.

I frantically googled "what to do when your SD Card doesnt recognize pictures"  and realized there are internet companies that charge $40 or so dollars to retrieve your photos online.  Kind of a scam, when you can do this for free.

I almost gave into the scammers.... until I Youtube'd the same words, and came across this Completely Free, helpful link that allowed me to retrieve 100% of all my pictures back. There were a couple of corrupted photos, however, Id have to say 99% were good.  Videos also were retrieved. Phew!

Here's the youtube instruction link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2M67kzSHm90

And the website free helpful software link:  http://www.z-a-recovery.com/

Hope this link helps you out if ever you've faced with this SD card error problem. One tip to keep in mind to prevent this from happening: Always remember to click the "Safely Remove" SD Card button on the lower right hand corner of your screen to prevent the corruption of any of your valuable photos when you remove the SD Card. :)

Why going to church is so important :)

TOP 3 reasons why we attend church, and why church plays a huge part in strengthening our faith.

1. Church reminds us to take the time to remember and thank God. Attending church allows us to take time out of our busy schedules to worship. At church, we have to give our Lord and Savior our full attention, something that is not easy to do in our own homes, even if we are in the habit of regularly talking to God through prayer.

2. Church also brings a community together. Attending church on a regular basis allows you the opportunity to meet other Christians. Faces become familiar eventually, and even if it was never your intention, you become part of the church family. You can even get tapped into church ministries and small groups!

3. Attending a church affords you the ability and the opportunity to give back. Whether it’s as a member of your youth group, the church choir, or a reader,  your time is always appreciated when you give it to your church to help others.

REVIEW OF CHRISTIAN RADIO FOR TORONTO CRTC HEARING: MAY 2012

FOR A FULL VERBATIM TRANSCRIPT OF THE HEARING, CLICK ON THIS LINK:

Go to line 6478 in the bottom half. http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/transcripts/2012/tb0510.html

FOR THE VIDEO WE PRESENTED  TO THE COMMISSIONERS, CLICK HERE:

On May 10th 2012, Life 100.3 (Touch Communications Ministries) made our presentation to
the CRTC (Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission)
for the Christian Radio format in Toronto.
We are one of over 20 other applications that include various
formats such as talk radio, business radio, ethnic, asian, blues, etc.
Each radio applicant was given 20 minutes to make a video
and oral presentation, which was played on this big screen:

For a link on the video Life 100.3 showed the commissioners
to showcase the importance of Christian Radio in Toronto,
click on our station manager Scott Jackson's website:

http://christianflamethrower.blogspot.ca/2012/05/crtc-hearing-may-10-2012.html
The Commissioners were Louise Poirier, Stephen Simpson,
Tom Pentefountas, Leonard Katz, Candice Molnar, Peter Menzies and Marc Patrone,
and they sat up on an elevated platform, to ask us questions (see below):

This is where the audience sat to watch. There were not too many
people in the audience for our presentation, but thats OK...
less intimidating for us.

Pastor Ginette Howse from Malvern Christian Assembly gave her 5 minute
endorsement for Christian Radio in Toronto.

In her presentation, she talked about The CRTC Vision:
"World-class quality communications, with a distinct
Canadian presence, in the public interest"

She asked that if we call Toronto a World Class City like LA and New York,
then why dont we have a Christian Radio station?

She also spoke about the thousands of people in her church, representing
over 40 different nationalities. And the thousands of other people
in surrounding churches who attend services every Sunday.

She also talked about church budgets, and how they are strong supporters
of ministries like Christian Radio.

And how many in her congregation have bumper stickers of Christian stations
in the USA.

We all felt Reverend Ginette had a very powerful, compelling presentation!
Even ALL the commissioners leaned forward to hear her speak!
Praise God for her highly valuable input. What a blessing!

When shaking the hands of the commissioners after, one had even mentioned
how we had a "very strong endorser" (being Pastor Ginette).

In this picture, Life 100.3 Program Director Steve Jones answered questions
about the programming/music, and next to him, our Station Manager Scott Jackson spoke
on things such as demographics and how according to Stats Canada,
65% of Torontonians call themselves Christians, and even answered questions on the TCB board members.
Drew Brown, also in this picture, spoke from a perspective of a Christian Artist.

Fazal Karim in this picture, was able to talk about local advertising dollars
being lost in Toronto to the USA, because there is no outlet on FM for
Christian Radio in the GTA; and our broadcast technician Paul Firminger
spoke on the transmitter costs and rental space, and due
to the signal strength only being 800 watts,
that it was not as expensive to operate as high powered FMs.

L-R - Andrew Hamilton, Drew Brown, Janice Baird, Scott Jackson, Steve Jones,
Maria Lopez, Fazal Karim and Paul Firminger

All in all, it is only by Gods grace that we would be able
to be granted this license. According to one listener who emailed us today,

"Keep praying, because in the last half second,
God can change the Commissioners decision in our way, in God ways."
(from Life 100.3 listener Joao)

We have faith for the best outcome.
In our presentation we talked about: what makes our listeners/announcers
different is that we believe in a "Higher Power" (aka Gods grace through Christ).

One commissioner commented on how we were on a mission to "save souls".
Although this is what the Christian heart believes,
I have spoken to many listeners who support Christian Radio who
are non-Christian, and listen for the family friendliness.
So, we know the value this type of uplifting music can bring into people's lives.

At the end, the commissioners wished us "much success in the future."
One Commissioner had even referred to Chuck Swindol's teachings,
and another Commissioner from Alberta mentioned that he was familiar with
Christian Radio there, calling it "quite the powerhouse operation."

We are very thankful for this opportunity to present the possibility of
Christian Radio in Toronto. And we pray for the best.

Please continue to pray for us, and for the commissioners, that God will
touch their hearts and move them to see value in bringing the hope
and faith revealed in Christian Music to more people.

This was the picture ending the day of CRTC hearings, driving
out of the "Princess Gates" in Toronto. May God's hand be on this whole process.
We Believe. We Trust. And We Give Thanks we serve a GREAT, GLORIOUS God.

Bright Stars on March Break... wait a minute, those are planets!!!

If you've been star gazing these past few days,
you may have noticed 2 very bright stars right
next to eachother that are brighter than the others.
Well, those-- arent necessarily stars, and they're
not satellites either-- they're the planets
 Venus and Jupiter.
After slowly moving toward each other steadily
for the last few months, the two planets
that look like bright stars to the human eye,
finally came together in what astronomers call
a planetary conjunction this week, putting on a
spectacular show for skywatchers around the world.
The two planets lit up the night sky in tandem,
appearing so close together that observers
could blot them both out with just a few fingers
held at arm's length. And they will provide a lasting display
for the next several days.
Venus-Jupiter conjunctions are fairly special events,
occurring roughly every 13 months. This year's was
especially stunning, experts say, because the two planets
were visible for so long in the sky and appeared so bright.
Just another God-made phenomenon, reminding us of
his great glory as the very first line in the bible dictates in Genesis 1:1...

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

Christian NBA Player Jeremy Lin shares how God directs his path

You've probably heard about NBA player Jeremy Lin's AMAZING 3 pointer Tie-Breaking Shot at the Toronto Raptors Game VS The New York Knicks on Valentines Day (Feb 14 2012) at the Air Canada Center downtown Toronto, with less than 1 SECOND to go!!!

Just who is Jeremy Lin?  He's 23 years old, a Harvard Grad, and the first NBA player of Taiwanese decent. He plays for the New York Knicks, and he's a Christian.

Here's the incredible shot he made... footage of the last 10 seconds from last Tuesday night's Game:

Last Year, Jeremy spoke at a Christian church, sharing about how God directed his career path to the NBA, in circumstances beyond his control.  He also talks about "God's fingerprints" on his life.

Pretty neat to hear of more and more athletes showcasing near-to-impossible goals... and then, when people get curious about them, they eventually find out where their heart lies and beliefs, and hear about how God is working in their lives.

Here are some bible verses that I came across that show how God truly is in control of all situations, and it is our CHOICE to acknowledge it or not.... However by acknowledging His ways, GREAT things can come about, that can help us understand his amazing, unconditional, everlasting love....

”A man's heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9

"Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take." Proverbs 3:6

"The LORD will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength."  Isaiah 58:11

How to Make Bacon Roses for Your Valentine

1. Buy plastic Rose stems from the dollar store (if they come with a rose already you can just remove the rose)
2. Roll Up Bacon the Shape of a Rose BEFORE cooking... you wont cook this on a stove top but rather bake them in the oven in Cupcake Pans so they retain their shape. Bake at 375 degrees F.
3. Pick the best bacon-roses once they are cooked,
dont forget to take a paper towel to wipe off all the grease, and place them on the stems!

Happy Valentines!

What if an animal got into your car....

This week on The Breakfast Club, we heard about mice, raccoons, squirrils, and even porcupines getting into people's vehicles/engines to chew on cables or to make nests!

Here's probably what your vehicle would look like if A BEAR got into it.... (courtesy of a man in Alberta who left his doors unlocked at a National Park and a bear managed to get in... yipes!!!!)

Some Tips experts recommend to deter critters from making "a new home" in your vehicle include using moth balls, and to even consider placing mice traps by your car with some yummy bait like fruits or nuts. (Just make sure you dont step on one yourself!)

Would you try a Darth Vader Burger?

If you lived in Belgium or France, and had a fastfood drive thru called Quick, of course you would!

Especially since its only available in the month of February.
Now the question is... how much black dye do they use on that bun?  Or, is it... um... burnt????
